When film star John Wayne arrives in Tuckahoe to promote his latest film and to visit Arthur, his biggest fan, the visit is moved from Arthur's house, because of a caved in roof, to the Findlays, as a still in awe Maude then gets into a debate with him over womens' lib in "Maude Meets The Duke", the opening episode of Season 3.

Maude Meets The Duke was the premiere episode of Season 3 of Maude, also the 47th overall episode in the series. Written by Robert Hilliard, Bob Schiller and Bob Weiskopf, the episode, which was directed by Hal Cooper, premiered on CBS-TV on September 9, 1974.

Arthur has been sending fan letters to John Wayne for years. When John Wayne visits the town to film a movie, for publicity he has a scheduled stop at Arthur's home. But the roof caves in, and the event is held at Maude's place.


As part of a publicity tour for a new movie, John Wayne makes a stop in Tuckahoe, to visit Arthur, his number one fan. However, when the ceiling caves in at the Harmons, Arthur talks Maude into hosting the party. Maude decides to have a verbal shootout with the Duke about woman's lib but finds herself tongue tied when she actually meets him.
