Maude's Dilemma: Part 1 was the ninth episode of Season 1 of Maude, also ninth in the series. Prepared for TV by Susan Harris from a story written by Austin and Irma Kalish, the episode, the first part of a two-part story, which was directed by Bill Hobin, originally aired on CBS-TV on November 14, 1972.

Synopsis[]

Maude must make a difficult decision when she finds out she's pregnant at 47.

Storyline[]

Part 1 of a two-part story. At 47-years-old, Maude discovers she is pregnant and must figure out how to tell the news to Walter as she plays cards with neighbors Arthur and Vivian Cavender (Rue McClanahan). Maude and Walter are scheduled to play cards one evening with some friends but Maude is anything but in a card playing mood. Especially since, she just came back from a doctor's appointment with some shocking news. At 47 years old, Maude has become pregnant. Now the hard part, breaking the news to Walter.

  • The episode marks Rue McClanahan's first appearance as Vivian Harmon (as recently divorced Vivian Cavender), the two, Vivian and Arthur Harmon, who had begun dating, would get married by Season 2, in the episode "The Commuter Station" (#19).
  • Coincidentally, among the writers of "Maude's Dilemma" was Susan Harris, who went on a decade later to create the hit 80's sitcom The Golden Girls (1985), which co-starred McClanahan and Bea Arthur.
  • The first of the series' five multi-part stories.
