Maude's Big Move: Part 1 was the 22nd episode of Season 6 of Maude, and the 139th overall episode in the series. Directed by Hal Cooper, the episode, which was written by Richard Herlan, originally aired on CBS-TV on April 8, 1978. It was also the first episode in a series-concluding three-part story arc.

At a Chinese dinner party given for her Congresswoman friend, Maude discovers that Carol and Phillip are moving to Colorado; Vivian and Arthur are moving to Idaho; and her friend (Mary Louise Wilson) collapses dead on the floor.


Part 1 of three part story. Maude throws an authentic Chinese dinner to welcome her friend, Irene, a Congresswoman back from a trip to China. However, everyone invited seems to have news that may upset Maude, Arthur and Vivian are planning on moving to Idaho, Carol and Phillip are planning on moving to Colorado and Walter is selling his business and is planning on retiring and to make matters worse, Irene collapses.

  • James Hong made two guest appearances on All in the Family, first, he played the part of a doctor in the episode titled "Archie Gives Blood" in Season 1 (#4) and then as a Chinese Waiter, who's now also the owner of the Chinese Restaurant where Archie used to take Edith when they first got married 25 years earlier that he decides to take her back out to on All in the Family in the episode titled "Edith Breaks Out" in Season 6 (#8).
  • The episode marks the final series appearance of Adrienne Barbeau as Carol Traynor.
