Eugene "Gene" Blakely appeared on All in the Family as the Bunker family doctor Dr. Seymour Shapiro in one episode, Season 5's "Birth of the Baby (Part 2)" Gene was a revered stage/TV/film character actor who is perhaps best remembered as Darrin Stephens' rambling, inattentive confidant on the hit ABC-TV sitcom series "Bewitched".
Career[]
A revered character actor of more nearly five decades, Blakely had roles in "The Desperate Hours", "Teahouse of the August Moon" and The Male Animal, among other shows. In addition to his stage work, he also appeared in the movies "The Sand Pebbles" and "The Prisoner of Second Avenue", On TV he usually made guest appearances in many shows which included AITF, The Bob Newhart Show, The Donna Reed Show, Maude and The Mary Tyler Moore Show. His work in film in cluded Beach Red, That Darn Cat!, Used Cars, and Murphy's Romance.
Death[]
Gene, who was a long time resident of Phoenix, AZ, and who began his acting career working on and Off Broadway in the 1940's and 50's, succumbed to bone cancer at the Greater Community Hospital of Creston, Iowa. [1]
