Edith's Crisis of Faith (Part 1) is the 13th episode of Season 8 of All in the Family, and the 170th overall episode in the series. Prepared for TV as a teleplay written by Bob Weiskopf and Bob Schiller from a story penned by Erik Tarloff, the episode, which was directed by Paul Bogart, originally aired on CBS-TV on Christmas Day, December 25, 1977.

Synopsis[]
Edith's faith is severely shaken when their friend Beverly, the female impersonator, is murdered at Christmastime. Part 1 of a two-part story.
- Note: Originally aired as a one-hour episode. In syndication, it is shown as a two-part episode.
Storyline[]
Edith is thrilled when her good friend, female impersonator Beverly LeSalle, pays a visit and announces he will be playing Carnegie Hall after Christmas. Mike offers to walk Beverly to a cab on his way to the store to buy a new star for the Christmas tree, but tragedy results when they are attacked by a couple of muggers on Christmas Eve. Mike survives the attack with only minor injuries, and recalls that Beverly saved him from being bludgeoned with a metal pipe. Beverly however, is bludgeoned and beaten to death, presumably because the muggers recognized who and what he was.
Edith becomes distraught over the death of her friend Beverly and wonders how God could allow such an act of violence to happen to someone simply because he was different. She then questions her faith in God. The family tries to console her, as she's stopped attending church, which she usually does each Sunday.
