Edith's liberal cousin, Maude Findlay, arrives to help in caring for a flu-ridden Archie and Mike.
Archie, Mike and Gloria are all sick with the flu, and Edith is running herself ragged in trying to take care of all of them. To Archie's dismay, Edith's cousin, Maude comes to help out. Maude and Archie purely dislike one another, due to their opposing political beliefs (Archie's an arch-conservative; Maude an arch-liberal).
While she dislikes Archie, she gets on well with Mike and Gloria, due to their beliefs being more in line with hers. She cooks a huge breakfast for Edith; makes some custard for Mike and Gloria, while feeding Archie Cream of Wheat with Cheese. He rushes to the bathroom, and then Maude sits in his chair.
Archie and Maude get into a huge argument about Franklin Delano Roosevelt, whom Maude admired, and Archie gets his chair back, while Maude gets ready to leave. However, it is Edith who is now sick with the flu. Archie demands who is going to take care of them. Maude taps him on the shoulder and says, "Maudie's here!"
At the end, it was revealed that during the time, Maude also gets the flu, and she is shown coming down the stairs as she was recovering from the flu.
Bea Arthur makes her first-ever appearance as Maude Findlay, ultra-conservative Archie's ultra-liberal cousin. Described by Archie as "the original creeping socialist," Maude has steered clear of the Bunker household for years. But when the entire family comes down with the flu, "Maudie" arrives to take care of the household -- and, of course, to cross ideological swords with Archie!
