Maude & Walter are having a dinner party with some friends. Walter's friend Albie is a fun-loving prankster who irritates Maude but makes Walter laugh. When Albie dies during an operation, Walter no longer feels safe.


Walter's fun-loving prankster friend (Eugene Roche) dies during an operation, leading Arthur to question his abilities as a doctor. Arthur's old college buddy, Albie Doyle comes to town because he wants Arthur to perform his hernia operation. Arthur is willing to oblige but when Albie dies of a heart attack following the operation, Arthur falls into a deep depression and decides to quit his practice, leaving Vivian up in arms over what to do.

  • Michael Keaton's TV debut.
  • Mary Jo Catlett, who played the nurse, would work with Conrad Bain on the NBC-TV sitcom series Diff'rent Strokes five years later as Pearl Gallagher.
  • Eugene Roche also played the part of Archie Bunker's buddy Pinky Peterson who, like Arthur Harmon's buddy Ablie, is also a practical jokester; he appeared in three episodes of All in the Family as Pinky.
