Archie's Operation (Part 1) is the sixth episode of Season 7 of All in the Family, and the 138th episode in the series; it is also the first part of a two-part episode story arc. Co-written and prepared for TV as a teleplay by Milt Josefsberg and Mort Lachman from an original story penned by Calin Kelly and Jim Tisdale, the episode, which was directed by Paul Bogart, originally aired on CBS-TV on October 27, 1976.

Synopsis[]
Note: Part 1 of a two-part episode,Archie goes into the hospital and has a verbal run-in with a Puerto Rican nurse and gets a blood transfusion from a black doctor. Still unemployed, Archie checks into the hospital for gall bladder surgery, a situation that proves to be anything but routine. Not only does he find Edith reading a Playgirl in the waiting room, he has to deal with a smart-alack Puerto Rican nurse and then a burly West Indian surgical assistant who preps him for surgery by giving him a shave . . . but not on his chin.
Note: Originally shown as a one-hour episode, depicting Archie's surgery. In syndication, it is aired as a two-part episode. This is Liz Torres's first appearance as Theresa Betancourt, who will appear in five additional episodes during the 1976/77 season. Sally Struthers does not appear in part 2. In the second part of this episode, Mike mentioned Gloria, a couple times.
Storyline[]
Archie's pain turns into something more serious as he has to have his gallbladder removed and he is taken to the hospital right away for the operation. Archie's trip to the hospital turns into an ethnic nightmare for him. He's admitted by a Puerto Rican receptionist, treated by a Jewish physician, and is forced to accept a blood transfusion from a female West Indian doctor's assistant.
